Green Woodworking: Ladderback Chair

 

This workshop will explore the essential skills used in making a chair from a tree.

 

drawknife_detail_195During this course, students will make a two-slat, bent-back, post-and-rung chair with a woven seat.  Working with green wood, students will learn to shape the chair parts and join them together, using simple tools and traditional woodworking skills.

This workshop will include an overview of the properties of wood and wood movement, instruction in shaping, bending and drying chair parts, as well as procedures for working safely with hand-tools.  Students will also learn methods for boring, chiseling and hand fitting mortise-and-tenon joinery, and to weave a comfortable chair seat with colorful canvas tape.
